Mitford Parish Council

Historical Society

The society, founded in 1999, is a local history society providing talks, excursions and exhibitions based in Mitford.  We are a small society but new members are always most welcome.

Meetings are held in Mitford Village Hall at 7.00pm on the second Wednesday during the months of April, May, June, July and August with our AGM in September. During 2022 meetings are free from subscription; an annual membership fee is to be decided at the September 2022 AGM.

The society started as part of a millennium project to research Mitford history, producing a book about the village called ‘Mitford 2000’ – copies are still available.

The aims of the society are to stimulate public interest within Mitford and in the county of Northumberland; we also gather and preserve documents, photographs and objects relating to Mitford.  We hold the Canon McLeod Photograph albums, which are on display in St. Mary Magdalene Church Mitford, during the months of July to August.  A small archive can be made available for members’ research and is frequently on display in the village. Research is ongoing by several members with a specific interest in aspects of the past.

If you have an interest in local history, do please contact a member of the society, or come along to one of our meetings. The programme of events for 2023 is here.
